It reminds me of a desperate under fire politician on borrowed time saying what the public wants to hear him say (not necessarily what he believes), to try and cling on to power by his fingernails.
A stupid statement to make, akin to Beckham's claim before the 1999/2000 season that Manchester United would go unbeaten all season. If Aus happen to lose or draw the first test, Ponting will be revealed to have been speaking nonsense and if the team are under pressure anyway at that point they are going to have the added distraction of their hubris being thrown back at them for the rest of the series.
