The way it used to be

Read today that Neville Cardus used to write his copy in longhand and send it to the Guardian in a taxi.

Now that's better than email...

    Years ago I read that Cardus would write a heading, scrunch up the paper, chuck it out, repeat.

    Eventually, after many stop-starts, he would bang out his article without so much as a pause.

    Ulysses Grant wrote his battle dispatches on his desk, and as he finished each page, would simply push it off the top onto the floor. When he was finished, he'd collect all the pages, order them, and then send them out.
