The consolations of a cricketing life
Years ago I read that Cardus would write a heading, scrunch up the paper, chuck it out, repeat. Eventually, after many stop-starts, he would bang out his article without so much as a pause.
Ulysses Grant wrote his battle dispatches on his desk, and as he finished each page, would simply push it off the top onto the floor. When he was finished, he'd collect all the pages, order them, and then send them out.
I had that summary of the first day of the Old Trafford test in the back of my cab once.
I think I'm going to start throwing paper around. Brit, too good...
