Office solutions

After Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell were dismissed by apparent no-balls at the Oval:

Caller to Phil Tufnell's radio show: 'They should just put a line of plasticine down, like they do for the long jump'.

Phil Tufnell: 'Or a beam of light across the crease, sets off a buzzer in the umpire's pocket when it's broken. Job done'.

Or they could just get the third umpire to check the replay, lads...

Will this happen when they bring in the referral system OB, and will the 3rd umpire be able to intervene if he thinks the on-field umps have been mistaken?

Or they could require bowlers to wear a device in their boots which administered a severe electic shock if they crossed the line. Or they could put a line of trained frogs along the crease, which would ribbit if the bowler overstepped. Or they could...

I'm hoping that the referral system will do it automatically for every wicket rather than only on appeal by the referring side, but I don't know for sure, it's a good question.

The sensible thing to do would be to have it checked by rote on each dismissal. Apparently Collingwood was out to another no ball in the second innings. Rauf's been worse than Billy this test - the decision he gave Stuart Clarke was diabolical...

We have seen third umpires informing the on-field umpires when there is a 5-ball over.

It is time they stepped in to report no-balls that were overlooked as well.
