I wonder if this isn't what happened to Mitchell Johnson.

What are the chances a top batsman would rather face a proven good bowler than an unknown?Tim Newmanhttp://www.desertsun.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6193495965695124697.post-8694979353236944872012-02-01T17:36:04.337-08:002012-02-01T17:36:04.337-08:00Well, the England spinners in 2002/03 were Ashley ...Well, the England spinners in 2002/03 were Ashley Giles for one Test and Richard Dawson for four...Tonyhttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/cricket/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6193495965695124697.post-77472197338050983232012-02-01T15:49:46.632-08:002012-02-01T15:49:46.632-08:00great post - you remind me of the advice that Bill...great post - you remind me of the advice that Bill o'Reilly gave to the young Benaud. Benaud's captain at the time was Lindsay Hassett, a great player of spin. O'Reilly diagnosed that he had no respect for spinners because he played them so well and gave Benaud advice on how to counteract. Similarly, Gooch played the spinners of his era quite well - apart from Warne - and captained spin bowlers very poorly. His spiiners always looked demoralised before they even began to bowl.

I remember reading Tuffer's Telegraph blogs before he was picked againt Australia at the Oval for the last time....he knew he was in for a roasting at the hands of Hayden and Hussain was not captain enough to pull him round - same thing on the tour in 2002/3...the English spinners did not get the captaincy they needed, or were they just not good enough?diogenesnoreply@blogger.com
